Welcome · About Us · History

Safe Families for Children is a ministry of LYDIA Home Association, a Chicago-based Christian social service organization founded in 1916. LYDIA launched Safe Families in 2002 with just a few volunteers, but the ministry has since grown to a network of 500 volunteer families serving as many as 300 families in need each year.
Safe Families is the only program of its kind and magnitude in the country, and it is making a tangible difference in people’s lives. In 2008, Safe Families expanded its services to the Spanish-speaking community by adding a Spanish-speaking caseworker to its staff. The need for Safe Families within the Spanish-speaking community is so great that it is a challenge to meet client demand.
With more than 85 years of experience in serving at-risk children and families, LYDIA is uniquely qualified to provide a program such as Safe Families. Over the years LYDIA, which was founded as an orphanage, has become a successful alternative to state-run foster care and family assistance agencies. It reaches people in diverse communities with a continuum of clinical and supportive services, from foster care to counseling, residential treatment to abstinence education.
